Jane Buyers, born in Toronto, attended York University and the University of Toronto. Afterwards, she became an educator at institutions such as George Brown College, Fanshawe College, Toronto School of Art, Guelph University and the University of Waterloo. The featured work is one part of a 13 part series of bronze reliefs depicting domestic tools, titled Gather…Arrange…Maintain. This series highlights objects that are passed down through the generations within the female domestic sphere. Not only is it symbolic of women’s history within the private sphere, it is at the same time reflecting the artist’s own personal memories and experiences as a woman. Buyers recalls a time where these tools were an extension of the human body and powered by human strength. The tools that she chooses for her work are immersed in meaning and history, displaying a side of history that is often ignored.
